When we say ‘emergency’, here’s what we’re talking about…

Plumbing Emergencies

There are 3 kinds of water problem:
• No water
• Water that won’t stop
• Water that smells bad

All 3 can be classified as emergencies and, as plumbers, we can appreciate that they’re all equally disastrous scenarios in your home, as well as in your business.

Obviously having no water will put a stop to normal functions at your property. Water that smells bad could well involve a health threat. And water that won’t stop is sure to leave a trail of destruction to add to its inconvenience.

To catch dripping water and prevent it from flooding everywhere temporarily, buckets and basins can be used. Make the area accessible for your plumber, moving furniture as needed to allow access to the pipes.

Action You Should Take

When water is flooding your property, immediately phoning an emergency plumber makes sense. Something else you should do quickly is stop the water by closing off the mains supply.

The location of this shut-off valve is generally to the street side of the property. For a house, it is often set in a trench not too far from the pipes in your bathroom.

With the water supply closed off, you’ll also need to switch off your hot water system. A water heater that runs dry will soon become a damaged water heater.

Find the circuit breaker for your water heater on your switchboard. Switch it to the off position. Also turn off the water supply to your hot water tank. This valve is typically located on top of the water heater. Turn the shut off valve clockwise until it stops.

For gas hot water systems, look for the thermostat near the bottom of the water tank. Turn the knob on top of the thermostat clockwise to the off position.

Look for any other valves on your plumbing and close them off to prevent any water still in the pipes from flowing on to the source of your plumbing emergency.

Gas Emergencies

Natural gas has no odour, however, you will know there’s a gas leak because your gas supplier adds a special chemical to give it the smell of rotten eggs. As unpleasant as that might be, it’s a better call to action than a pleasant smell when you have a gas leak.

You can check gas lines and connections for leaks by spraying with a mild soap solution. Any leaks will expose themselves by bubbling where the solution is sprayed.

Turn off your gas supply by turning it clockwise.
